SHIFT TO CLEAN ENERGY TO MITIGATE CLIMATE CHANGE

By Janelle Okongo. Climate change has become a global menace in Africa and as such the use of clean energy needs to be scaled up to fight this environmental catastrophe dragging us behind. According to the report by UNEP, around 80% of global energy, 66% of electrical generations are supplied from fossil fuels which in turn contributes to 60% of greenhouse gas emissions responsible for climate change. While energy accounts for 60% of global greenhouse gas emissions, the UN calculates that 13% of the world population still lacks electricity and that 3 billion people rely on fossil fuels like charcoal for cooking and heating. Currently, approximately 40 million Kenyans rely on polluting fuels such as charcoal and wood for cooking. It's because they do not afford the cost of liquefied petroleum gas(LPG) that rose up in price due to the effects of COVID-19 and value added tax that were put in place on LPG in 2021. Report by International Energy Agency (IEA) access to clean cooking en...

STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST JOURNALISTS

By Janelle Okongo Journalists are the key propellers of information. They perform their job to their best level in ensuring information reaches wide audience. Journalists sacrifices a lot and go extra mile endangering their lives, with an intention of keeping the world informed. Politicians should accord much more respect to the media personnel. It is through these individuals that politicians are able to speak to large masses across the world without in person interactions. They should refrain from behaving in uncivility manner by deploying goons to intimidate journalists. Their presence in rallies should not be muddled up with role of a spy. The purpose of journalism is neither pleasing those who hold power nor covering events for personal gain. Journalists collect, investigate, analyses and report all beats full of facts. Journalists are being assaulted through physical attacks and verbal threats with the aim to silence them. Violation takes form of murder, kidnap, cyber-bullyi...

KILLING OF ARSHAD, PAKISTAN JOURNALIST SHOWS IMPUNITY

By Janelle Okongo  Extrajudicial killings that are continuously being executed in the country, are raising an alarm and inflicting fear and insecurity to people as the family of deceased battle with psychological torture in the struggle to overcome the loss. The murder of a Pakistan investigative journalist, Arshad Sheriff at Magadi, Kajiado county is a deep leak in the dark to our country. This tends to feature the culture of impunity in our country where individuals are abruptly deprived off their right to life. The circumstances revolving around the death of Sherrif raises much more questions on what exactly triggered his execution. Was he killed for mistaken identity? Why did the police fail to look at the number plate of his car to determine if he was the culprit? Why was the driver not shot?  Arshad's killing has raised a lot of suspicion and this is endangering the lives of investigative journalists responsible for uprooting evil deeds of the society by working u...
