SHIFT TO CLEAN ENERGY TO MITIGATE CLIMATE CHANGE

 By Janelle Okongo.

Climate change has become a global menace in Africa and as such the use of clean energy needs to be scaled up to fight this environmental catastrophe dragging us behind.

According to the report by UNEP, around 80% of global energy, 66% of electrical generations are supplied from fossil fuels which in turn contributes to 60% of greenhouse gas emissions responsible for climate change.

While energy accounts for 60% of global greenhouse gas emissions, the UN calculates that 13% of the world population still lacks electricity and that 3 billion people rely on fossil fuels like charcoal for cooking and heating.

Currently, approximately 40 million Kenyans rely on polluting fuels such as charcoal and wood for cooking. It's because they do not afford the cost of liquefied petroleum gas(LPG) that rose up in price due to the effects of COVID-19 and value added tax that were put in place on LPG in 2021.

Report by International Energy Agency (IEA) access to clean cooking energy help avoid 1.8 million premature deaths annually by 2030. There is need to cut short of carbon monoxide produced by charcoal, stoves and wood by upholding clean cooking in order to save lost lives and protect our ecosystem.

Now the main question stands, what can we do in our capacity as a country to achieve full transition to clean energy?

Kenya has made a great move by increasing access to electricity from below 30% in 2013 to 75% in 2020. It is evident that 25% of the population still lacks electricity. Therefore president Ruto's government need to prioritize this to ensure all households acquired electricity by all means.

As a country, we need to rely on renewable energy such as solar, biomass wind and geothermal power in order to keep our habitat clean. We therefore call for international community to invest money in research and technology concerning clean energy like Glasgow breakthroughs so that clean energy can be enjoyed worldwide.
