CHANGE THE PLIGHT OF SPORTS PERSONALITY

By Janelle Okongo,

Cabinet secretary for sports, Ababu Namwamba pronounced this intention to build  roadmap towards honouring sports individuals for their determination and efforts in  this field following his approval to the docket.

As a nation, Kenya has numerous talents that have consequently made headlines in athletics and other sports like tennis and rugby. It is through the dedicated individuals such as Angela Okutoyi, Eliud kipchoge and Mary Moraa among other who have propelled our country's name to greater heights both locally and worldwide.

The big question is, why are the sports men and women not appreciated through looking into their well being and matters ailing them?

It is evident that some are battling with mental illnesses due to the kind of sports they engaged in earlier like boxing, unfortunately they have been abandoned after there dedication to this country as for the case of Conjestina Achieng.

Others who would become the next star of Kenyan sports took break from this field due to illnesses and injuries and cannot afford treatment that requires huge amounts to get attended to.

Some of those who retired from sports, are faced with severe poverty which is a stumbling block to their happiness until others think of selling medals they were awarded to make both ends meet.

Lack of funding is what kills untapped upcoming talents for they cannot afford to sponsor themselves to both local and international matches to showcase their capabilities.

It's now time, for sports industry to be revived through coming up with solid solutions such as introducing health insurance that will seek to cover specifically for medical bills of sports person's,  give monthly salary to those who have devoted all their time in sports, issue pension to those who retired from sports, ensure their often free mental check-up and often recognize and reward them for their selfless efforts towards this country.

As it stands, sports is a contributor to the economy, let's look for long term solutions to curb all ailing matters our stakeholders who are sports men and women.
